Detoxification

Detoxification, or detox, is the process of letting the body remove the drugs in it. The purpose of detox is to safely manage withdrawal symptoms when someone stops taking drugs or alcohol. Everyone has a different experience with detox. The type of drug & alcohol consumption and how long it was used affect what detox will be like. In order to help patients to cope with withdrawal, they will be given appropriately controlled medication as part of the detox process. There is no medication that prevents all withdrawal symptoms, but some types of medication can help to ease anxiety and depression, enable sufficient sleep, and counteract as many other problems as possible. Once a person reaches a level of recovery stability, where they are not taking replacement medications to control withdrawal symptoms and they feel clearheaded enough to participate in conversations about addiction, it is time to leave the medical detox facility behind and enroll in rehab. A rehab program allows the fragile sobriety earned in detox to become a matter of habit and persistence. With the right rehab program, people can get better for life. It can take days or months to get through withdrawal symptoms for most drug addiction / alcohol addiction. The length of withdrawal symptoms depends on a number of factors, including :-

Alcohol Detoxification

Alcohol detoxification is a process by which a heavy drinker's system is brought back to normal after being habituated to having alcohol in the body continuously for an extended period of substance abuse. Precipitous withdrawal from long-term alcohol addiction without medical management can cause severe health problems and can be fatal. Alcohol detox is not a treatment for alcoholism. After detoxification, other treatments must be undergone like rehabilitation program & medication, etc to deal with the underlying addiction that caused alcohol use.

Drug Detoxification

Use drug detoxification to reduce or relieve withdrawal symptoms while helping an addicted individual adjust to living without drug use; drug detoxification does not aim to treat addiction but rather represents an early step within long-term treatment. Detoxification may be achieved drug-free or may use medications as an aspect of treatment. Often drug detoxification and treatment will occur in a community program that lasts several months and takes place in a residential / rehabilitation centre. Drug detoxification varies depending on the location of treatment, but most detox centers provide treatment to avoid the symptoms of physical withdrawal from drugs. Most also incorporate counseling and therapy during detox to help with the consequences of withdrawal.
